VO₂ max on its own is just a number in mL/kg/min — it only becomes meaningful once you know how it compares to other people of your age and gender. Exercise physiology labs and sports science programs classify VO₂ max into performance bands (commonly labeled Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent, and Superior) so a runner or coach can quickly see where a result falls relative to the general population and to other endurance athletes.
Typical VO₂ max classification bands
The ranges below reflect the kind of age- and gender-adjusted bands used across most published normative fitness tables. Treat them as a general reference rather than an exact diagnostic cutoff — individual labs and testing protocols vary slightly.
Men (mL/kg/min)
| Age | Fair | Good | Excellent | Superior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20–29 | 38–43 | 44–51 | 52–56 | 57+ |
| 30–39 | 34–39 | 40–47 | 48–52 | 53+ |
| 40–49 | 31–35 | 36–43 | 44–48 | 49+ |
| 50–59 | 27–31 | 32–39 | 40–44 | 45+ |
| 60+ | 23–27 | 28–35 | 36–40 | 41+ |
Women (mL/kg/min)
| Age | Fair | Good | Excellent | Superior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20–29 | 33–36 | 37–41 | 42–46 | 47+ |
| 30–39 | 30–33 | 34–38 | 39–43 | 44+ |
| 40–49 | 26–29 | 30–34 | 35–39 | 40+ |
| 50–59 | 22–25 | 26–31 | 32–36 | 37+ |
| 60+ | 18–21 | 22–27 | 28–32 | 33+ |
Why competitive endurance athletes score so much higher
Elite male distance runners commonly test in the 70–85 mL/kg/min range, and elite female distance runners in the 60–75 range — well above the “Superior” bands above, which are built from the general adult population rather than trained athletes. That gap is mostly earned through years of consistent aerobic volume, not a single training block.
What your band actually tells you
A higher band means your heart, lungs, and muscles can deliver and use more oxygen per minute, which generally correlates with faster sustainable paces. It does not automatically mean faster than someone in a lower band, since running economy and race execution still matter enormously — two runners with identical VO₂ max scores can run very different times off the same fitness.
Curious where you currently land? Run your numbers through our VO₂ max calculator, which also explains the VDOT-style math behind the estimate in more detail in our VDOT breakdown. If your number is lower than you’d like, the fastest, lowest-risk way to move it is consistent Zone 2 aerobic training.
